Promise of the Father
We may merit salvation with repentance, baptism and our receipt of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38). Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and rise again from the dead the third day; and that repentance for forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in His name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
Behold, Jesus is sending forth the promise of His Father upon the apostles and disciples, but they are to stay in the city until they are clothed with power from on high (Luke24: 46-47, 49-New American Standard). The apostles and disciples indeed after waiting received the gift of the Holy Spirit as there appeared to them tongues as of fire.
These rested on each one of them distributed in themselves and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance (Acts 2:3-4). When this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were bewildered, because they were each one hearing them speak in his own language.
They were amazed and marveled saying, “Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born?” These that wonder were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men, from every nation under heaven (Acts 2:6-8,5).
And they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others were mocking and saying, “They are full of sweet wine.” But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven raised his voice and declared to them, “These men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day.”
He said, “This is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel: ‘and it shall be in the last days,’ God says, ‘that I will pour forth of My Spirit upon all mankind; and your sons and daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams’ (Acts 2:12-17).
Before the great and glorious day of the Lord shall come, the sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood. And it shall be, that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved (Acts 2:20-21). Having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, Jesus has poured forth this, which they both see and hear.
As they heard Peter said this to them, the house of Israel then had known for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ - this Jesus whom they crucified (Acts 2:33,36). They were pierced to their hearts upon hearing this, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?”
And Peter said to them, “Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God shall call to Himself (Acts 2:37-39).
